Documenting tax-exempt status

Not-for-profit corporations must submit an Internal Revenue Service Letter of Determination conferring 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status upon the sponsoring organization. (Please note: Do not submit documentation of your state sales tax exemption. A state sales tax exemption does not satisfy the request for documentation of an organization’s exemption from federal income tax.) A copy of the actual IRS letter is required. Providing a tax-exempt number is not sufficient for documentation purposes.

Church organizations may provide, if applicable, evidence of membership in a larger religious organization that has been determined to be tax exempt by the Internal Revenue Service (example: the Internal Revenue Service has ruled that a number of international church organizations such as the United Presbyterian Church USA, the United Church of Christ, the United Methodist Church and its Affiliate Organizations and the United States Catholic Conference are all exempt from federal income tax. This exemption extends to all affiliates). If a church organization is a member of such an organization, it may be entitled to tax exemption as an affiliate. If that is the case, the organization should obtain a copy of the IRS tax-exempt letter of the larger organization, along with a letter from a national, regional or district body (synod or convention), documenting that the local church is in good standing with the larger organization and include that with its submission.

If a church is non-affiliated, it may contact Foundation staff for assistance in establishing acceptable documentation of exemption from taxation.

Failure to provide the correct documentation of tax-exempt status with a Letter of Interest will disqualify the letter and cause it to be removed from active consideration by the Grants Committee.

Prior submission of tax-exempt information

If an organization has previously filed tax-exempt documentation with the Foundation, there is no need to re-submit documentation.  If you are unsure whether this was done, please call our office to verify.
