GENERAL OPPORTUNITY
While the majority of the available funds are directed to the specific targets, the Foundation did consider and award grants to projects utilizing a faith approach to address issues of concern within the community.
 
Buffalo Trace Council of the Boy Scouts of America
Scoutreach Programs
$15,000
Continued expansion of Scoutreach programs that provide after-school scouting for Cub Scouts and new troops for youth 11-14 years of age. Funds to support volunteers, fees, program supplies and activities.
 
Impact Christian Health Center
Continuation of Dental Program
$39,000
Continuation of the dental program established in 2001 which provides dental care services for the underserved. Funds will be used for personnel, supplies and equipment. Goal is to provide in-going education, hygiene and preventative care.
 
Community Marriage Builders
Marriage enrichment and reconciliation seminar
$2,500
This program is designed to educate mentor couples and to educate the public on the importance of preparing for marriage, enriching marriage and restoring marriage. These funds will be used to conduct a marriage enrichment and reconciliation seminar.

HEALTH MINISTRIES IN CONGREGATIONS

Health Ministries are congregation-based health and other support services directed toward the congregation and the community, delivered by trained health professionals and lay persons, both paid and volunteer. This is inclusive of parish nurse programs that can be developed as an integral part of a church's program if the resources of a trained Registered Nurse are available.

The grants in this category are designed to assist congregations in forming and extending Health Ministries for their members and community.

Health ministry expansion to provide Safe Sitter instructor class and office equipment.


North Haven General Baptist Church

Expansion and further development of existing health ministry.

Christ Church United Church of Christ

Expansion of health ministry to improve the quality of life of young people and families in the congregation and surrounding neighborhoods.  A weekend retreat for young people will be held in the spring and youth from other churches in the community will be invited to participate. Funds are for additional health equipment, supplies, retreat expenses, and part-time nurse.

Funds to continue program development and provide additional training for the parish nurse and volunteers.

St. John The Apostle Catholic Church
SOUL Empowerment

Continued development and operation of nutrition and exercise program, parish nurse stipend. The Foundation has approved a direct grant of $5,600. In addition, the Foundation agrees to fund $2.00 for every $1.00 of new funds raised by the Grantee up to a maximum of $10,000.

Expansion to include community outreach with health education programs and basic preventative services


St. Peter's United Church of Christ

Initiation of health ministry that has arisen from activities during the past 3 years.  Will include: 1. weight reduction program; 2. nutrition and healthy cooking classes; 3. yoga; 4. lending library with holistic health videos, cassettes, books, and internet access.


St. Agnes Catholic Church

Continuation and expansion of health ministry.  Activities include exercise and fellowship for seniors, tutoring program for school-age children, wellness education, health screening, flu and pneumonia shots, connecting participants with community resources.


LITERACY, LANGUAGE AND LEARNING
The 1991 National Literacy Act, defines literacy as: "An individual's ability to read, write, and speak in English, and compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and in society, to achieve one's goals, and develop one's knowledge and potential."

In recognition of the efforts to improve literacy and learning skills among a variety of age and ethnic groups in our community, the Welborn Foundation announces grants to the following organizations:


The Guadelupe Center (Huntingburg, Indiana)
Improving Literacy, Living and the Quality of Life for Hispanic Workers and their Families
$50,000
A program to implement activities resulting from the Hispanic community needs assessment. Needs identified include: expanded ESL training; establishment of a computer lab; teaching Spanish to emergency workers; developing and conducting basic life skills workshops; developing youth programs; providing translation services; provide transportation; conduct diversity training; develop Hispanic leaders. The Foundation has approved a direct grant of $25,000 plus a dollar for dollar matching grant up to $25,000 with the proviso that the match should reflect support from the business community.


Marian Day School
High School Special Education Resource Program
$6,000

Continuation of the special education resource program in the Evansville Catholic High Schools for students at risk academically, who have mild learning disabilities and are not passing ISTEP. Use of Funds:  To provide partial funding of a resource teacher salary, professional development program for faculty and staff, and program development (supplies, materials, etc.)

Holy Spirit School

An after-school extended learning program in which high school students and a teacher coordinator supervise homework study and offer remediation in math and reading of grade school students. The goal is to keep the students focused on academics and away from the distractions of illicit drugs and sexual activity. 

Patchwork Central, Inc.

After School Tutoring Program Expansion
$4,500

Funding to expand the Patchwork Central After School Tutoring Program including the hours of the tutoring coordinator and to increase the coordinator's pay. Funds are also included for the purchase of two additional tutoring workstations.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION
Alcohol and illicit drug use are associated with many of this country's most serious problems, including violence, injury, and HIV infection. The annual economic costs to the United States from alcohol abuse were estimated to be $167 billion in 1995, and the costs from drug abuse were estimated to be $110 billion.
 Alcohol and illicit drug use are associated with child and spousal abuse; sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection; teen pregnancy; school failure; motor vehicle crashes; escalation of health care costs; low worker productivity; and homelessness. Alcohol and illicit drug use also can result in substantial disruptions in family, work, and personal life.

In recognition of the critically important need to steer young people toward positive life choices, the Welborn Foundation announces grants to the following organizations:
 
St. Mary Catholic Church
Strenthening Families Church and Community Collaboration (SFCCC)
$42,388
This program will provide funding for the implementation of the Strengthening Families Program in a collaboration of churches.
 
The SFCCC consists of a collaboration of six local churches and the Youth First Foundation in which Youth First will assist the churches with training, materials, facilitation and evaluation of church-based Strengthening Families 10-14 programs. The churches include: St. Mary, St. Agnes, Holy Rosary, Holy Redeemer and Good Shepherd Catholic churches and Crossroads Christian Church.
 
YMCA of Southwestern Indiana, Inc.
Y-CAP and Diamonds programs
$30,000
Continued funding for 2 full-time staff for Y-CAP and Diamonds, programs that focus on healthy development of low-income youth who are most vulnerable to drugs and crime.
 
Young Life Evansville
Program expansion
$30,000
A program to provide a mentoring program for substance abuse prevention including: 1) a fulltime intern who will mentor locally through Reitz High School; 2) A weekly club that will provide kids a drug free environment to have fun in throughout the year; 3) a weekly Bible Study called 'Campaigners' for those kids who want to further explore their faith; 4) Mega Weekend, an opportunity for kids to bond further with their peers and mentors in a drug-free environment; 5) a week at Young Life camp. Actual expenses include salary, program costs, office expenses, training, camp scholarships and evaluation.
