As you may have read or heard,
the Boards of Directors of the Welborn Foundation, Inc. and the Welborn
Baptist Foundation, Inc. approved the merger of the assets and operations of
their organizations, effective January 1, 2005. The merged organization is
the Welborn Baptist Foundation, Inc.
A December 2004 statement issued by Foundation Chairman John Dunn best
explains the merger: “We believe that, based on the economies of scale as
well as the logistical simplicity, this move will allow us to serve our
constituent community better and more effectively. Rather than running on
dual tracks, we will consolidate operations such as the grant application
process with the intention to make the application process easier for the
grant seeking community. Anticipating that few things will change in
the community's perspective, we will maintain the faith-based principles
that were part of the mission of Welborn Memorial Baptist
Hospital and that have been the hallmark of the two Foundations over the
past five years. A minimum of ten percent of the grants will be awarded to
churches and faith based organizations, a proportion equal to that of the
previous Welborn Baptist Foundation grants.”
Our community’s churches and faith-based organizations have unique
access to individuals in need; through years of compassionate service, they
have developed a trusting relationship with the community that is paralleled by
few not-for-profit organizations.
Many talented individuals within these independent organizations
are devoted to delivering humanitarian assistance, but their
efforts are often hindered by a lack of financial capacity to
deliver the necessary assistance.
Welborn Baptist Foundation endeavors to
strengthen the chain of faith-based humanitarian efforts in our
community by binding together the powerful resources of
individual organizations with similar goals and providing
financial support to make a greater difference for our
community. Since 2000, when the Foundation first opened its
doors, it has sought to support churches and faith-based
organizations in our community. In that time, the Foundation has
granted more than $1
6 million dollars to a variety of worthy
causes. Funding has been focused in the areas of
Early
Childhood Development, Promotion of Healthy Adolescent
Development and Substance Abuse Prevention
,
Improvements to Community Health Status, School-Based Health and
Social Services, Health
Ministries in Church Congregations, Literacy and a broader General
Opportunity category.
With the merger, we are
initiating a focus on Faith-Based programming the extends beyond
Health Ministries. We are now actively considering programs that
serve to strengthen the faith of the individual.
We
have brought to our grant making
effort a focus on a number of key concepts: the Foundation’s
theme for grant making continues to be
the strengthening of community values for life-long education,
healthy lifestyles and personal and
community responsibility. Our goals for grant making are: to
support quality and effective education
that starts at birth and continues throughout life; to
increase healthy lifestyles through health promotion and
prevention; to increase personal and community
responsibility for a healthy community with self-esteem and a
high quality of life.
We continue to seek quality projects that incorporate the
important principles of: (1)
researched and evidence-based practices and interventions; (
2) address root causes of issues
affecting good health and quality of life;
( 3) demonstrate evidence of
organizational collaboration.
The Welborn Baptist Foundation's community investments transcend
simple financial support. We strive to ensure that each decision
we make is a compassionate one. Our partnerships are true
collaborations, which involve team building, idea sharing and
technical support. We also work with our partners to leverage
additional support from various other sources.
We take the responsibilities as a community partner very
seriously. We believe we have the
opportunity to improve lives and renew lost hope, and we are
committed to helping bring about a brighter future for all
within our reach.
Sincerely,

Marjorie Z. Soyugenc
